JOB DESCRIPTION
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS AND POSITION OVERVIEW
As part of the GCCS’ academic team, the School Culture Associate works under the direction of the leadership team to ensure that high behavioral expectations are consistently communicated and maintained throughout the school. The School Culture Associate will establish a strong academic-centered culture; ensure the functionality of school-wide systems that support student achievement, safety, efficiency, and the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile; and ensure that the high expectations we have for our scholars are maintained in each classroom and by all teachers at GCCS.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Support the implementation of our school's culture and discipline policies, including Responsive Classroom practices and other research-based best practices
- Assist in planning and facilitating Assemblies, Dialogue Circles, Advisory sessions or Morning Meeting, and other student and family events
- Support the development of and reinforce clearly defined school-wide systems and daily routines such as entry, dismissal, lockers, transitions, breakfast, lunch, and recess
- Proactively circulates throughout the school during the day to gain valuable context on student behavior and help support positive school culture
- Collaborate with the school leadership team to ensure the physical environment of the school is conducive to a safe and supportive learning environment.
- Collaborate with teachers to reinforce positive behaviors aligned to the IB Learner Profile and address student misconduct using logical consequences
- Help coordinate and facilitate conflict resolution processes, including community apologies and restorative circles
- Assist in tracking and analyzing student behavior data to identify trends and areas for improvement
- Contribute to the planning and execution of character development and social-emotional learning initiatives
- Bridge the gap between our culture and operations teams, flexibly adapting to various roles to support our school's cultural and non-instructional objectives
- Support and report on culture-related data, including attendance tracking, out of classroom time, consequences, and family follow-ups
- Offer hands-on support in managing student behavior, including de-escalation techniques, mediations, and information gathering
- Lead a student advisory group with a focus on academic and social-emotional learning
- Lead additional individual and group sessions such as at-risk groups, electives, SETSS, or small groups, as needed and as the schedule allows
- Support with student supervision during arrival, departure, breakfast, lunch, and recess as needed.
- Serve as the first point of contact for discipline/culture issues; recommend consequences to school leaders and ensure consequences are carried out
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required
- Strong commitment to an inclusion model of education; experience with and/or understanding of the urban learning environment
- Ability to build strong relationships with students, families, and staff
- At least one year working with middle school-aged students in a structured setting such as a school, after-school program, or summer camp
- Experience working with students who have behavioral challenges and/or IEPs preferred
- Experience or coursework related to counseling, social work, or child development preferred
- Be a team player - a desire to work in a team-oriented environment and collaborate effectively with colleagues
